New York State Republican Chairman Nick Langworthy kicked off his “stop the madness” tour Monday with a rally outside the Staten Island district office of Rep. Max Rose. Rose, a Democrat who defeated incumbent Republican Rep. Dan Donovan in 2018, recently voiced support for a House impeachment inquiry. While his district has more enrolled Democrats than Republicans it has frequently gone for Republicans. Langworthy says he’ll be touring the state to rally supporters in opposition to both an impeachment inquiry and impeachment of Donald Trump, all with an eye on potentially competitive House districts.
Langworthy was joined by Staten Island Republican Chairman Brendan Lantry, NYS Conservative Party Chairman Jerry Kassar and 30-40 supporters. No elected officials attended. The attendees and speakers were fervently pro-Trump and anti-Rose, with no apparent concerns for recent revelations of the president’s problematic conduct.

It was upbeat disappointment at the election night party of public advocate candidate Eric Ulrich as one of the very few Republican elected officials in New York City placed second in a field of 17 candidates. With such a large field, including seven present or former members of the NYC Council and NYS Assembly, Ulrich had a rare realistic opportunity for a Republican victory in a citywide election.
Attendees were clearly disappointed at Ulrich’s loss but there was also widespread satisfaction at his besting 15 candidates, including many elected Democrats.
Council Members Steven Matteo, Joe Borelli and Bob Holden were the only elected officials joining Ulrich. Party leaders attending included New York State Republican Chairman Ed Cox and the five Republican county chairs from New York City, Brendan Lantry of Staten Island, Joann Ariola of Queens, Ted Ghorra of Brooklyn, Mike Rendino of the Bronx and Andrea Catsimatidis. NYS Conservative Party Chairman Jerry Kassar also attended.

Public advocate candidate Eric Ulrich held a meet & greet Saturday afternoon at Staten Island Republican headquarters, drawing a small audience for a petitioning pep talk. Two Staten Island Republican elected officials, Ulrich’s fellow Council Member Steve Matteo and Assembly Member Mike Reilly, joined Ulrich for a public display of their support. Council Member Joe Borelli was expected to attend but cancelled due to a conflicting personal event. Staten Island Republican Party Chairman Brendan Lantry attended and hosted the speaking program. The party has endorsed Ulrich.

Staten Island Republicans celebration of several election victories was tempered by the loss of their congressional seat, as Rep. Dan Donovan was defeated by Max Rose. Donovan appeared onstage ahead of the other candidates, accompanied only by his family, to offer a concession to Rose.
