Photo Gallery: Sharpton Hosts Buttigieg

The Rev. Al Sharpton hosted presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg for lunch Monday at Harlem’s Sylvia’s Restaurant.  The menu was more talk than food, however, as they walked through a press gauntlet on arrival, sat with a pack of photographers snapping their table time and held a packed sidewalk press conference.

Photo Gallery: Maloney Rally

Rep. Carolyn Maloney held a rally outside the Upper East Side’s Asphalt Green condemning anti-semitism, shortly after anti-semitic graffiti appeared in an Asphalt Green locker room.  Maloney was joined by Assembly Members Dan Quart and Rebecca Seawright, Council Members Ben Kallos and Keith Powers, the Rev. Al Sharpton, JCRC Executive Director Michael Miller and Rabbi Arthur Schneier of Park East Synagogue.  A group of 10-15 counter-protesters joined the approximately 200 people attending, protesting what they characterized as Maloney’s insufficiently aggressive response to Rep. Ilhan Omar.

2018 Year In Photos

New terms, lots of candidates, fiercely fought elections, victories and defeats both surprising and not.  Lots happened in 2018 New York politics and we’ve distilled the year into our 2018 Year in Photos.

Photo Gallery: Johnson At NAN

Newly elected Council Speaker Corey Johnson visited the Rev. Al Sharpton Saturday, joining Sharpton for his weekly rally and radio broadcast at the National Action Network.  Council Members Jumaane Williams and Robert Cornegy also appeared.

Sharpton expressed disappointment that none of the African-American candidates for speaker succeeded, but nonetheless gave Johnson a warm welcome.  Underpinning that welcome was Johnson’s active support and campaigning for Sharpton in his 2004 presidential campaign.

2017 Year In Photos

Mayoral candidates fighting and occasionally smiling, a governor working his fellow electeds and the cameras, a hometown president passing through.  Those are among the images in our 2017 photo retrospective.

Shot entirely in the five boroughs, our photo retrospective reflects our 2017 focus on the mayoral election and particularly on challengers looking to defeat Mayor de Blasio.  There’s more, however, with a mix of light moments, conflict and loss.

Our photographic look back at 2017 is available here.

Photo Gallery: African American Day Parade

Sunday’s African American Day Parade drew elected officials to Harlem, including Mayor Bill de Blasio and Republican/Conservative mayoral candidate Nicole Malliotakis.  de Blasio, accompanied by his wife Chirlane McCray, received an extremely warm welcome.  Steadily working the sidelines as the parade worked its way up Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard, de Blasio was showered with smiles, handshakes and hugs.  Malliotakis worked her way through waiting marchers ahead of the parade, but did not march in the parade.  She was well-received, with many people interested in her candidacy, but her reception did not match de Blasio’s.

Bo Greetings

Mayoral candidate Bo Dietl had mixed results as he sought out Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio ahead of the West Indian Day Parade this morning.  Cuomo and de Blasio lined up separately for the parade, with Cuomo doing a brief press Q&A before marching.

As Cuomo walked toward the waiting press Dietl called out “we love Governor Cuomo”, drawing a finger point and “ohhh, Bo.”  “Democrat Bo” replied Dietl.  As Cuomo and the Rev. Al Sharpton stood waiting to march Dietl moved in, drawing a “what’s up Bo” from Sharpton as they exchanged a handshake and kiss.  (“I know Al Sharpton 40 years … I regard him as a friend” Dietl said afterwards.)  A smiling Cuomo looked toward Dietl, shook his hand and kept smiling as he turned away.

Dietl moved on to de Blasio, waiting for a moment as the mayor posed for a picture.  “Mr. Mayor, no Columbus, come on, no Columbus” he called out, drawing a mayoral smile and quick handshake.  A silent Chirlane McCray, Mayor de Blasio’s wife, smiled wanly and gave a small flick of her flag as Dietl reached past her to take the mayor’s hand.

Rent Regulation Renewal Rally

Mayor Bill de Blasio and many other New York City elected officials joined a Harlem rally Saturday demanding the renewal of rent regulations.  Hosted by Assembly Housing Committee Chairman Keith L.T. Wright, the rally drew a modest crowd of about 200 people.  Speakers included the Rev. Al Sharpton, NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, Public Advocate Letitia James, Rep. Charles Rangel, State Senator Adriano Espaillat, Assembly Members Brian Kavanagh and Guillermo Linares, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Council Members Inez Dickens, Vanessa Gibson, Ben Kallos and Jumaane Williams.

With the legislative session rushing toward conclusion next week, expiration of the soon-to-sunset state laws governing rent stabilized and rent controlled apartments is an ever-increasing possibility.  While it’s still likely that they’ll be renewed, the prospect of expiration is driving City Democrats into increasingly frantic efforts to renew and expand those laws.  For Mayor Bill de Blasio it’s both an essential part of a core focus of his mayoralty and yet another chapter in the story of his friction-filled relationship with Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Here are the remarks of selected speakers:

King Day 2015: Cuomo Calls In

Governor Andrew Cuomo called in to the Rev. Al Sharpton’s Martin Luther King Day celebration today.  While other elected officials, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Public Advocate Tish James and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand joined Sharpton, Cuomo participated by phone.  His call suffered some technical troubles, with a first attempt scrubbed.  Here is his second attempt, which began with technical problems but which eventually worked.

Update: Here are photos from the National Action Network King Day celebration.
